Viola Desmond

By: Oliver.Lindsay

Viola Desmond was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia July 6, 1914. She is a black Canadian who ran her own barbershop and beauty college in Halifax.
On November 8, 1946, Viola’s car ran down while handing out her beauty products in Halifax. So while she was waiting for her car to be repaired she chose to go to a movie to waist sometime before her car was fixed. Viola paid for a ground seat but only white people are allowed to sit there and she still sat in the ground seats but then got put in the balcony seats. Then she sat back down in the ground seats and then she was put in jail for 30 days and paying 26$ fine, just for sitting a the ground seats.
Later in her life, she settled in New York and sadly died on February 7, 1965, at the age of 50 from gastrointestinal bleeding.
